Chana Masala Curry Recipe

Chana Masala is a vegetarian curry made from chick peas, spices and coconut cream. Popular in Northern India and often eaten with flat bread.

2 Tbsp Ghee or Oil

1/2 Tsp Brown Mustard Seeds

1 Medium Onion (Finely Chopped)

1 Tsp Chopped Garlic

1 Tsp Chopped or Grated Ginger

2 Fresh Tomatoes Chopped (or canned chopped tomatoes)

1 Tbsp Madras Spice Mix

1 Can of Chickpeas

150ml Coconut Cream

100ml Water (more if needed)

1 Tbsp Fresh Lemon Juice

Salt To Taste



1. Heat the oil on a medium heat until hot

2. Add mustard seeds and allow them to crackle

3. Add onion and cook until soft

4. Add garlic and ginger and cook for 1 minute on medium heat (do not burn)

5. Add chopped tomatoes and cook for 2-3 minutes

6. Add madras spice mix and cook for 1 minute stirring

7. Add chickpeas and cook for 1 minute coating in the spices and onions

8. Add coconut cream, water and bring to the boil stirring

9. Reduce the heat and simmerfor 12-15 minutes until the sauce has thickened

9. Add lemon juice, taste and season with salt


Serve with chopped fresh coriander and basmati rice
